This website is designed to give you all of the information about the plans to create a Community Trust for the Byker Estate and to keep you up to date about what will be going on over the next few months.
What is a Community Trust and what does it mean for Byker?
The community trust would be a not-for-profit organisation established to run and manage the housing on the Byker Estate for the benefit of tenants, and would be introduced following a positive response from tenants in a ballot.
The trust allows tenants to take a central part in decision making and to become shareholding members. Tenants, independent members, councilors and YHN representatives make up the management board and have powers to take local decisions. The trust will support local community initiatives to improve the environment and quality of life for all residents.
As a tenant or resident of Byker, you will probably have lots of questions about the Trust. We have tried to answer these in our Frequently Asked Questions page, but if you have any other questions call us on 0800 612 8280.
What area would the Trust cover?
Take a look at the boundary map that we have produced to show which areas of the estate would be included in the Trust.

What happens next?
A Community Trust will only be established if local tenants vote for one. We will hold a ballot in the autumn where we need you to vote yes or no to the creation of the Community Trust.
In the mean time, we will make sure you have all the information you need to help you make an informed decision.
We have set up a Tenants' Panel and the members of this panel will be involved in shaping the offer document which will outline the roles and responsibilities of the Trust and the board that will run it. A list of meeting dates and locations can be found in our 'What's On' section.
